This is not a book that tells you how to parent which is exactly why it is actually worth reading. It is a psychology book that helps you to understand that the way you parent or the feelings you have around parenting are essentially down to the way you were raised and the relationship you had with your own parents, family or carers.
So rather than provide you with unrealistic expectations, pressures and false checklists, this arms you with better clarity in why you and your child react in certain situations and an ability to accept what you have and ultimately, have greater power to focus on what kind of parent you want to be. It covers different stages of children's ages and gives examples of some of her clients' experiences but it is all relevant because it looks at the whole connection from childhood to parenting. It helped me think more of my child as an individual with experiences that will inform and stay with her and influence her own reactions and outlook.
This book has stayed with me. It also really helped me accept and better manage my relationship with my own father. It was like a release almost. Understanding why I do and feel the things I do around my children made me much better able to focus on what parts of parenting really matter to me. And it has made me much happier as a mother. I would even say it has helped me in how I manage my teams at work because it helps you see through other viewpoints.
Literally the other parenting books that present right and wrong ways of doing things are just others trying to push their own life experiences and beliefs onto you. This is really easy to read. I've bought it for others since. Buy this and throw all those sleep/potty training/gentle parenting list books or whatever books in the bin.
And buy from Black and Beech because your books arrive all nicely packaged from a great independent business.
Ok so you’ve heard it all before, how a book has changed someone’s life. I don’t say this lightly. Everyone needs to read this book. Parent or not; your kids/future kids/any kids in your life will benefit from you reading this. It’s given me so much psychological insight and changed the way I parent, and also helped me understand how my own childhood has shaped me. I couldn’t put it down and recommend it to all my friends! I’m so glad I bought from Black & Beech too. A wonderful small business in Wales :)
Black and Beech is awesome! I love my high quality LOVE sweatshirt - it's so hard to get t-shirts and clothes that use good quality cotton - amazing to feel the difference!
